The annual Stage and Cabaret Shield competition attracted six entrants who provided a diverse and entertaining evening for the packed room.First on was Bernard Visgandis with a varied act which included Ring and Rope routine, mind-reading bear, a Jap Box routine, and a card prediction with his female helper receiving a fantastic bowl of fruit (made from balloons!). Martin Key followed with a mental act consisting of Eddie Burkes’s version of the diary trick, Paola Cavalli’s Chairvelopes and Luke Jermay’s Touching on Hoy. Next on was Ivor Williamson with a very funny act in which he stabbed both his cheek and his tongue with a skewer, found a rock in his shoe and (finally) divined a ‘randomly’ chosen card from a member of the audience. After the interval Keith Pearson amused us all with his version of the glass of water on the head followed by a Marc Paul card prediction using five people. Next on was new member Jonathan Lovett who amazed everyone with his linking rings routine followed by his now legendary cups and balls Finally Paul Kybert gave a very funny whirlwind performance of a variety of effects including vanishing ring, vanishing watch, a crazy pom-pom Chinese sticks effect, a ring and watch in nest of boxes (luckily the same ones that had vanished previously), culminating in a hilarious rabbit production. The six judges, which included magic judges Myles and Linda Pollack and Ian Milton (President of the Coventry Magic Circle), declared Paul Kybert as the winner with Jonathan Lovett second and Bernard Visgandis third. Paul (who is also the current holder of the close-up title) received the Society Shield and a voucher for a dinner for two at the Coventry International Hilton.
