There was a good turnout for the lecture by US corporate magician Jon Armstrong.Jon is a card man having first started doing second deals at the age of 8 – taught by his father. Jon did not just show card ‘tricks’ but worked through each effect in great detail going through all the nuances of psychology and audience management. He also taught us many useful sleights, many of which are on his dvd accompanying the lecture. Highlights for me were ‘Out of this…’ (a very different approach to the Paul Curry trick), I Scream, You Scream (possibly the best ever trick for getting your business card into a spectator’s hand – and with a subtle way of making them contact you afterwards), a variation of the Mercury card fold utilising the card box to hide the dirty work, and his opening commercial card effect using Jon’s variation of the peek which can be used in many other effects. Jon’s lecture was one to make you think about your magic – ‘do not underestimate the audience’s intelligence’ and ‘think about the logic of every move you do’ were two important messages. Jon lectured for two and a half hours and was still showing effects an hour later to those who were reluctant to leave. His two sets of lecture notes, 2 hour dvd and special pen for the business card trick were excellent value too at £20.00 the lot. |
