Did you know that Northamptonshire boasts one of the oldest
magic clubs
in the country? The Club dates back to the mid-1920s, and it has existed in one form or another
ever since.
Below are a few details about the Club, covering such topics as:
STOP PRESS
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 2 December 2008 when it will be: Meet Up & Christmas Chat.
Please note that this will be held at The Quality Hotel in Westone, Northampton.
It is with deep sadness and regret that we have to inform you that our Life Vice-President, Richard Stupple MIMC, passed away earlier this morning (Sunday 11th November 2007). Richard had been ill for some time but had bravely resisted his condition. He was admitted to Moggerhanger Hospice on Monday.
Richard was a giant in British Magic and was a huge support to the Northamptonshire Magicians' Club and The Magic Circle, where he held the post of Chairman of Council. The world of magic has lost a great champion.
The Club currently has 31 members (including Honorary Members),
some of whom are "Newsletter only" members, who have moved away from the area but still wish to stay in touch with the Club.
Our members travel from places as far apart as Milton Keynes, Wellingborough, Rushden, Daventry and Bedford, as well as, of course,
Northampton. We even have one member who attends quite regularly whose home is in Devon!
Some of our members are full-time professionals, whilst others, like myself, are amateurs. In addition, several of our
members have won prestigious awards
within the magic world.
Many members have interests and extensive knowledge of a number of different specialities, including children's magic,
close-up, manipulation, mentalism,
magic squares,
ventriloquism, Houdini, juggling, stilt walking,
lying on a bed of nails, and face painting.
All of our meetings usually start at 20:00, unless otherwise specified, although members start to arrive from about
19:15 onwards. The meetings tend to finish between 22:00 and 22:30.
There is also a Juniors' meeting at least once per month, which is usually on the first meeting within any calendar
month. This starts at 19:00 and finishes just before 20:00.
The venue for most meetings is currently The Quality Inn
at Weston Favell, Northampton.
If you are over 16 years old and decide you want to join our Club, you should complete an Application Form and be
proposed and seconded by existing Club members.
A short audition will be required, where you will be asked to perform between eight and twelve minutes of magic,
which can be close-up, mentalism, children’s, cabaret-style, comedy or whatever, in front of whichever of our members
attend that night.
You will be judged by three Committee members, who will score your performance in three categories:
Conjuring Ability
General Presentation
Dress, Style and Personality.
If an audition in person is not possible, alternative methods will be considered, at the Committee's discretion. These
could include:
a video of a performance
a written submission (on an agreed subject and of a minimum length)
an "interview" with one or more Committee members.
Junior Members
We also have a Juniors' Section, which is for people who are between 11 and 16 who are seriously interested in learning the art of magic, where personal tuition will be provided by one or more of our members.
No formal audition is required, but we do like you to come along to one of our meetings so that we can talk to you and see what sort of magic you do already (if any).
